Who is behind Bdelicious?
I am Hannah, British and Aussie citizen, I LOVE to travel, I LOVE cooking, I LOVE inspiring you to be the best version of you and I LOVE sharing healthy alternatives to our favourite foods with inspiration from around the world!
I am a self confessed health and nutrition nut! Nicknamed squirrel due to my love of nuts and nut butters and well known to my friends and family as an avocado addict! (pppssssttt……I will tell you a secret, I have an avocado holder and I take it out with me to restaurants that don’t serve it for breakfast…….dont judge me just yet, I just love avocado lol!)
I also have a message to share with the world! The internet and social media is changing our perceptions, expectations and it is making everyone unsatisfied with what they have. I am concerned and I know that things like eating disorders, anxiety and depression will effect more and more people due to things like social media that give the wrong perception of life. I want to enforce the importance of not just healthy eating but the importance of looking after our minds, being happy with ourselves, loving ourselves, eating the right food particularly good carbs for women and looking after your body as you only get one!
A little bit more about me
I am nuts about travel and food! The world, its colours, its flavours, nature and the sun bring me to life! I love watching cookery programmes (masterchef and saturday morning kitchen are my guilty pleasure). I love wine (I have my WSET level 2 qualification, life is all about balance darling) I am a fully qualified NLP coach, I am training as a health coach with the fabulous IIN. I work as a part time commercial model and I am a presenter.
I am passionate about sharing my message and I am training to speak in schools and colleges about the importance of health and looking after our bodies, the effects of eating disorders in later life and how we need to find happiness in ourselves. I love fitness, adventure sports, dancing around my room to a good song, hot yoga, great food, amazing flavours, travel, meeting awesome people and truly living life.
I had to mention I was also the 2015 recipe winner of the Neals Yard Remedies Portugal competition! I won a trip to a luxury spa in Portugal on a health retreat for a week after entering my recipies into the competition!
This blog has also given me the opportunity to share my passion for food, travel, health, the importance of looking after our mind and bodies and how much I love flavours from around the world! I now look for inspiration everywhere I go, I love tasting and finding incredible recipes from around the world and putting a healthy spin on them and delivering them to you to make and enjoy :).
Have I always been a health nut?
No I have not always been the health nut I am today! At school I had a terrible diet, my outlook and diet started to change when I was spending time with my family who live in Mallorca, I was cooking with my uncles Mallorcian Mum Predina who did not speak a word of English but she taught me how to cook!
I have fond memories of her shouting at me in Spanish (probably good I could not understand what she was saying) with what to do and how to cook things and even though we could not understand each other and she did not speak a word of english we used to communicate and her food was so inspiring!
I have amazing memories of going and picking fresh figs off the trees in my families garden in Mallorca and eating them straight away, so plump, juicy and soooo delicious!
Where does my inspiration come from for food?
I think Spanish and Mediterranean cooking inspires a lot of my dishes! Spanish cooking opened my eyes to the world of good fats! They eat so much olive oil, literally drizzled on everything! They never use butter and hardly any dairy, all the food they eat is fresh and the vegetables are so vibrant and full of flavour. Instead of butter on sandwiches they drizzle fresh crusty bread with olive oil then rub it with tomato then cover it with chopped tomatoes with oregano or hard cheeses it is so delicious and fresh they call it Pamboli!
I now do exactly the same, I am not afraid of drizzling good quality cold pressed olive oil all over my food. I am not afraid of good fats and I am going to show you how you can include these amazing super foods and good fats into your diet to help you maintain a healthy weight and feel great! Being around the Mediterranean diet awakened my senses and my tastebuds! I grew so accustomed to eating a high fat diet packed full of fresh fruit and veggies!
I love the culture of food in Mallorca, I have such amazing memories of us all sitting outside as a big family, making Paella in the outdoor oven in a huge plate with fresh seafood and amazing flavours of saffron and the happiness and family feeling I got from it! Food brings people together and it brings so much happiness!
I may have mentioned I also LOVE LOVE LOVE to travel and I LOVE LOVE LOVE to try food in each place! It excites me and makes me feel alive! I love to taste new flavours, find new ingredients, new spices, experience cultures and take inspiration everywhere I go! I use these experiences to influence my dishes and make healthy flavour packed dishes that make you feel great!
Do you have a vice?
I am often asked when people are eating unhealthy food around me, don’t you even want a bit? Dont you miss it? or I dont know how you can stop yourself. Well it might sound crazy but I can honestly say I do not miss heavily processed foods and really sugary foods at all and I don’t look at them and crave them!
When you eat healthy your tastes change and why would I when I know that I can make healthy food taste so incredible! When I eat badly when all it makes me feel is lethargic, sluggish, slow and irritable. Even when I am bad my friends say I am good so it just shows how making lifestyle changes rather than dieting is the way forward.
I do however have a vice! It is wine, I don’t drink it to get drunk….far from it, it is one of my passions! I have taken several wine qualifications and for me it is enjoyment and pleasure. In a similar way to food I love the way wine has so many flavours and facets! Every bottle so unique with characteristics and they go with such different foods! Now I am not saying go out now and drink loads but there is nothing wrong in enjoying wine, life is all about balance and I am here to show you how to find that balance and live a new lifestyle not a diet. do not restrict yourself or make yourself feel guilty for having something you fancy simply enjoy your health and wellbeing and be healthy the majority of the time.
What do you eat and don’t you eat? What diet do you follow?
I do not follow any diets and I do not calorie count! I eat gorgeous plates of vibrant, colourful, tasty, amazing food! My recipes are plant based (loads of plants lol), mainly veggie, occasionally fish, occasionally goats cheese (You can read more about why occasionally goats cheese in my article good vs bad fats) I do not believe in diets they are short lived! I believe in making long lasting lifestyle changes that make you feel great and not deprived! The food I make is with whole foods and completely refined
sugar free, nothing processed just natural foods the way they were meant to be eaten! I am passionate about flavours and natural does not mean not tasty….far from it!! Many of my recipes are inspired by my travels. I am passionate about travel and even more passionate about flavours and taking foods and spices from other countries and sharing them with you in a healthy way.
The way I eat is also because I feel quite passionate about animal welfare and for that reason I made the decision a number of years ago when I educated myself about food and how the majority of meat is produced and how animals are treated to not eat any meat, I also cut out all cows dairy because I listened to my body and it did not work for me. This does not mean you should do the same I just ask people to be accountable for where the meat or dairy they buy comes from and try to buy from local farms where you can see the animals are treated well. I buy all my eggs from a local farm where I can see them running around happily and they taste so much better!
What is your advice to anyone who wants to be more healthy and happy?
My biggest bit if advice is to live a delicious life. You might laugh at that, what does she mean? Well it simply means to love yourself for who you are now. Do this by talking to yourself, nourishing yourself and exercising your body like you were someone you loved! If you really loved your body and wanted to look after it what would you eat today? What would you say to yourself? What exercise would you do? Would you get out in nature? Take a walk in the park?
Oh and be authentic to you! After all you can only be you, do not waste time living in someone else’s shadow or dream! Start owning who you are and living the life you deserve! Feed yourself delicious healthy food, do delicious exercise that makes you feel fantastic, love and do a delicious job at everything you do. Change that inner dialogue and talk to yourself with love and respect, if you are not nourished you are definitely not able to nourish other people.
Treat yourself the way you would treat others! Some of the sexiest women I know are not the most toned or have the biggest boobs or have the skinniest figure far from it, it’s the girl that owns who she is, that walks into a room with confidence and shines from the inside out! It is how you wear your skin that makes you super sexy not the other way around!
My eating disorder
This was possibly the hardest thing for me to learn. I had suffered with anorexia for a number of years, I went down to a size 4 and 7stone 4 lbs (This is tiny at 5ft 8) I am now a healthy, happy, sexy size 10 (see picture on the right) and proud, with curves, a booty, boobs, and a very healthy 9 stone! After being anorexic putting on weight was one of the hardest things to get to grips with! Also learning to like myself and then to love myself and how my body was for me. Everyone’s bodies are different and some women work so hard or lose so much weight just to have a thigh gap but the truth is most of us just are not naturally meant to have one.
One of my biggest bits of advice for young ladies in particular is DO NOT cut out carbohydrates!! It can lead to osteoporosis in later life, loss of periods, loss of fertility, problems having children, hormone imbalance, inability to lose weight. Trust me Carbs are good just eat the right ones not refined ones!
Do not be hard on yourself for having treats and the best thing is when you start eating healthy you will not want your normal treats you will want healthy treats ! If you are not perfect all the time do not worry, I used to have battles mentally with myself when I used to allow myself to have something even slightly naughty and it made me miserable! Just enjoy what you are eating!
I had to put on almost two stone in weight to get my periods back after anorexia, which was one of the hardest things I ever had to do and now I love every bit of the curvier me! Love yourself and others are drawn to you naturally. Live a delicious life and “OWN IT”
